Living in London
Location, location, location
Imperial’s central London location makes the College an exciting and inspiring place to study, and South Kensington – where our main campus is located – is one of London’s most attractive neighbourhoods.
Of course I realised Imperial was in South Kensington, but what I hadn’t appreciated was how utterly amazing it would be to live and study there!"
The streets are well paved and well lit, the public areas are well maintained, and having two Royal Parks on our doorstep (Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens) provides plenty of green open space.
We share the area with some very well known neighbours, including the Science Museum, Natural History Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, the Royal Colleges of Art and Music, and the Royal Albert Hall – where we hold all of our graduation ceremonies.
This ensures that our students have the best of both worlds: access to some of the very best teaching, research and leisure facilities while still being within easy reach of all that London has to offer.
Is London worth the cost?
There are many reasons why thousands of students each year decide that the benefits of studying in London outweigh the extra cost, including:
- the proximity to some of the world’s biggest employers, who regularly come to our campus to recruit our students
- being ideally placed to attend interviews, undertake internships, visit companies and go to networking events
- access to world class facilities beyond our campus, particularly the museums on our doorstep
- the opportunity to attend a multitude of public events run by professional associations, such as lectures and conferences
Although London can be expensive, with sensible budgeting and the wide range of student discounts available, your son/daughter will be able to enjoy much of what the city has to offer.
How safe is London for students?
We work closely with police liaison officers to deliver safety briefings throughout the year and personal safety campaigns with Imperial College Union.
We also have our own Security Service within the College; campus-wide CCTV monitored live by our 24-hour control room staff, and an emergency response team on standby at all times.
Imperial is the most international university in the UK, and the fifth most international in the world. As a student in London, your son or daughter will be welcomed into a city where over 300 languages are spoken and where over 100,000 students from 200 countries come to study each year.
Our International Student Support team can provide expert advice on a wide range of visa and immigration issues, even before your son/daughter arrives at the College. The team also provides information on welcome events and other social activities that can help them settle into life in the UK and make the most of their student experience.
