Overview
In addition to the Chemistry elements of the programme, the Centre for Languages, Culture and Communication provides the following:
- training in the use and presentation of scientific and technical material in French in written and oral forms. This is presented in a clear and effective manner for a range of purposes and audiences
- an introduction to the theory and practice of translation, with a focus on French for science
- further studies in the history, politics, science and technology of French speaking countries
- a research project and taught courses at an approved educational institution in France in the third year of the course

Course structure
Year 1
- General language course (French level 3 or French level 4)
A two-hour weekly language class from the Imperial Horizons Programme taught over two terms (Autumn, Spring).
- Year in Europe Class (French Level 3 YiE [pdf] or French )
A one-hour weekly specialist language class to prepare you for your stay abroad, traditionally taught on Fridays at lunchtime over two terms (Autumn, Spring).
A one-hour weekly lecture/seminar style course on contemporary French history and politics taught over two terms (Autumn, Spring).
Year 2
- General Language course (French Level 4 or French Level 5)
A two-hour weekly language class from the Imperial Horizons Programme taught over two terms (Autumn, Spring).
- Year-in-Europe class (French Level 4 YiE course description [pdf] or French Level 5 & 6 Year-in-Europe course description [pdf] )
A one-hour weekly specialist language class to prepare you for your stay abroad, traditionally taught on Fridays at lunchtime over two terms (Autumn, Spring).
A one-hour weekly lecture/seminar style course on the history of contemporary French Science & Technology taught over two terms (Autumn, Spring).
Year 3
- General Language course (French Level 5 or French Level 6)
A two-hour weekly language class from the Imperial Horizons Programme ( Autumn & Spring terms)
- Chemistry Translation [pdf] (French-English)
A two-hour weekly practical translation class focusing on discipline related texts, taught in two separate hours over two terms (Autumn, Spring).
Year 4
Year Abroad
Year spent in a partner French-speaking partner institution as part of the ERASMUS+ European exchange programme.
During this year of study, you are required to complete a Chemistry with Research Abroad Language Project Guidelines In the Autumn following your return, you will have to complete a Viva on your work .
