Student Caller FAQs

When and where is the telethon taking place?

Calling will start on Monday 22 October and the last shift will be on Sunday 2 December 2018. You must be available for compulsory training on Saturday 20 October (10.00 - 17.00) and Sunday 21 October (10.00 - 17.00).  Calling takes place in the SALC Mezzanine Office, which is located on level 5 of the Sherfield Building at the South Kensington Campus.

How do I apply for a job as a caller?

Please apply using the online form. The deadline for applications is Wednesday 10 October.

Will there be an interview?

Yes. Shortlisted candidates must attend a 15 minute face to face interview on the South Kensington Campus. Interviews will be held on Monday 15 October through to Wednesday 17 October. You can indicate a preference of a morning or afternoon interview and we will try and accommodate your schedule. You will be contacted by the email provided on your application regarding an interview time if you are shortlisted.  

Who is eligible to apply for a job as caller?

All current students of the College are eligible to apply, provided that you have proof of your right to work in the UK. You can find details of the documents you are required to supply here. You must have a very good level of spoken English and be reliable and enthusiastic.

How many callers are you recruiting?

We need a reliable team of around 55 callers to ensure the campaign is a success. 15 callers are required for each shift.

How much do I get paid and how often?

You will receive an hourly rate of £9.25 on weekdays and £11.25 at weekends. Your wages will be paid monthly. A UK bank account is necessary for payment to be issued. You will also need a National Insurance number. Callers are added to the College's payroll system and wages will be transferred monthly via BACS into your bank account.

When are the shifts and how long are they?

Shifts take place during the evening and at weekends. You will be required to attend a minimum of two shifts per week and at least two weekend shifts throughout the campaign. It is important that you meet these requirements to aid your development. Shift times are as follows: 

  • Evening: 18:30 – 21:30
  • Saturday: 12:00 – 16:00
  • Sunday: 16:00 – 20:00

You will have breaks and be provided with refreshments. You will need to arrive at least 10 minutes before the start of each shift.

How many shifts can I work per week?

You must be able to commit to a minimum of two shifts per week, equating to six hours of work. Please see the College policy on Student Employment during studies for further details. The aim is for the shifts to be flexible and work around your studies and other commitments.

What if I can't make a shift for any reason?

You must not sign up for a shift unless you are sure that you will be able to make it. When you sign up for a shift that represents a firm commitment that if you are allocated it you will be able to attend. However, as with any job, if you are ill or an emergency occurs then you must inform your manager as soon as possible so that alternative arrangements can be made.

Will I receive any training?

Yes. The paid training sessions will take place on Saturday 20 October (10.00 - 17.00) and Sunday 21 October (10.00 - 17.00). Attendance at all training sessions is compulsory and you will receive an hourly rate of £9.25 for completing the training. Callers will also receive ongoing training throughout the campaign.

Can I take part if I'm based at another Campus (e.g. Silwood Park)?

Yes, but you will need to travel to the South Kensington Campus (calling takes place in the Alumni Office, Level 5 Sherfield Building - based at the South Kensington Campus).

Is this cold calling?

No. All alumni contacted will have recieved notification that the campaign is taking place, and will be expecting your call.

Do you raise much money?

Yes. In our three campaigns in 2018-19, we raised more than £330,000 in pledged support from alumni across our 10 priority funds.

Is speaking a second language advantageous?

Yes. We have a large number of international alumni and will be making calls to some European countries so a good spoken level of another European language would be useful.

I don’t have a National Insurance number and the form won’t submit without one.

In order to work in the UK, you will need to apply for a National Insurance number. However, you are still eligible to apply for the job. Please write ‘pending’ in the relevant box on the application form, and inform your supervisor as soon as you receive your NI number.
