DisabledGo logo

Imperial is committed to providing dedicated support to its staff and students in order to ensure they maximise their potential and progress regardless of their disability.

The College is working with DisabledGo to provide accessibility information for all our campuses. This information is not only useful for our College community, but DisabledGo can be a valuable tool for those visiting the College.

The Comms team has produced guidelines on accessibility that should be followed when producing materials. Comms also has a web skills module on accessibility for College web editors to learn what accessibility means and how you can make your website more accessible for your users.

Information on Disability Support

Declaring a disability

The College encourages staff to declare a disability to their line manager and through ICIS. ICIS is the College's online employee self service system and we strongly encourage you to review and updated your personal details, including disability. Your staff record is confidential; ICIS access is only given to specifically authorised persons who are responsible for complying with the Data Protection Act and Imperial's policy on security of information.

We hope that all staff will feel comfortable declaring a disability, and as more people do so, the better informed the College becomes about the facilities and support that is needed. The HR declaration page has further detailsIf you would like to discuss declaration please get in touch with your HR contact

Students can declare their disability:

  • as part of their UCAS application
  • to the Disability Advisory Service
  • to their department
  • by updating their student record

The Disability Advisory Service has developed information about declaration and confidentiality specifically for students.

For staff

The Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Centre (EDIC) can provide information, advice and guidance for disabled staff and their managers. This includes reasonable adjustments and support available within and outside the College, such as Access to Work. All discussions are held in confidence. EDIC also has a screening and assessment for process for staff who think they may have dyslexia or other specific learning differences.

EDIC has produced information sheets to summarise the support available in College:

The College encourages staff and their managers to use our Staying Well (SWELL) Plan template (Word) to help discuss adjustments and plans that could be put in place. A personal SWELL Plan can be used to proactively manage health and wellbeing.

The Able@Imperial staff network promotes a positive culture around disability and provides a forum for discussion of disability issues in the workplace.

Calibre is a personal and professional leadership programme designed to support and develop disabled staff. It is run by EDIC with an external consultant and is free for College staff.

For students

The Disability Advisory Service provides flexible and tailored advice and support for current disabled students. They also act as the first point of contact for prospective students or their parents, seeking information about disability support for students within Imperial College. Their service is both confidential (information about you is only passed on to other people in the university with your agreement) and individual in that any support is tailored to what you need.

The Imperial College Union has has nine Liberation & Community Officers. Two of these Officers are dedicated to Disabilities and Mental Health, and they work to represents the needs of all students and improve the experience and support in place for students at Imperial.

Across the College there are Departmental Disability Officers who act as the first point of contact within a department for students. For example they will apply for special exam arrangements on a student's behalf and will facilitate the student's support within the department.
