Examinations

Please note that the below guidance is applicable to exams run by the Department of Bioengineering only.

Students who are taking exams in other departments (Business School, Computing, Dyson School of Design Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Horizons, Materials and Mechanical Engineering) are advised to contact the relevant department directly as they may have their own procedures.

 You are expected to check exam timetables for modules that you might be taking in other departments on your own initiative. If you discover a clash with an exam from another department then please inform the Student Office (RSM 3.21c) straight away.

 

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
All students must read the following document produced by the Department of Bioengineering: Exam information for students 2017-18, which covers information about what to expect, how to behave and what to do in the event that an unexpected situation prevents you from attending an exam.

You should also read the following documents produced by the College:

  1. College’s instructions for exam candidates
  2. College’s policy on student academic integrity, assessments and examinations

Key instructions to make a note of include:

  • You should familiarise yourself with the location of the room in good time as exams can take place anywhere on campus and it is your responsibility to find the right room.
  • Please arrive at the examination room 10 minutes before the start time.
  • You must bring your College ID card and your own writing instruments (pens, pencils, rulers etc.). Pencil cases must be transparent. You can bring a single transparent plastic bottle of drinking water into the exam room but no other food/drink is allowed unless you have official approval by the Registry.
  • You are not allowed mobile phones, smart watches, palm pads or personal calculators in the exam room.
  • Bags and coats are not allowed at the examination table; they must be put to the side of the room.
  • You should ensure you check your pockets for revision notes before entering the room.
  • You must be silent at all times whilst in the exam room.
  • If any circumstances prevent you taking the exam, showing up on time or potentially affect your performance, you must contact the Student Office straight away and submit a mitigation form

 

ROOM ALLOCATIONS
The Student Office will publish room allocation lists between 24-72 hours before each individual exam. These will be published on the ‘Timetables’ tab on the ‘Programme administration’ area of the internal pages on the website. They will also be published on the noticeboard outside the Student Study Room (RSM 3.06). Seating plans will be made available on the day outside each examination room.

It is important to note that we will not be contacting you with any information prior to any exams; it is your responsibility to check the timings and locations of all of your exams on your own initiative.

 

DURING THE EXAM
For a written exam, candidates can expect to find the following on their desks:

  • A label sheet with the module information and your CID number to place on any answer booklets you use. Please note that one label will have your full name on it; you must ensure you do NOT use this label – only use the labels with your CID number only.
  • A main exam booklet(s) and question paper.
  • A calculator, graph paper, formula sheet(s), and other resources if applicable.

Supplementary booklets can be requested from the invigilator if needed.

Calculators will be provided for every student where an exam requires one. The department uses the Casio fx-991ES PLUS model. Candidates are not permitted to use their own. Please be advised that other departments may use different models.

You will be asked to complete the section on the right hand side of the exam answer booklet whereby it states in bold: “Please complete this section”. You will be expected to fill in your last name, first name and signature. You will then be asked to peel the protective strip and fold the flap over so your details are hidden. This is a security mechanism for identification.

You will then be asked to peel a label (with the CID number and module information) from the label sheet, and place it on the front of your answer booklet and any other booklet you use to answer the exam questions. Please listen to the invigilators for further instructions on this.

Once the exam has finished, please ensure you write the question numbers of the questions you have answered on the exam booklet.

NB: Some exams might have more than one answer booklet because there are different markers for different questions. The invigilator will inform you if this is the case. In instances like this, please ensure you label ALL answer booklets.

You must follow the instructions of the invigilators once you enter the examination room. Any candidates caught cheating or disobeying instructions may be investigated following the College’s cheating offences policy and procedures (Scroll down to EXAMINATION REGULATIONS).

 

SPECIAL EXAMINATION ARRANGEMENTS
If you require additional time for exams, or have other special additional requirements due to disability, it is important that you make an appointment with the College’s Disability Advisory Service (DAS) in order to have your needs assessed. DAS must assess you even if you have previously had exam arrangements or other adjustments in place at school or another university.  Please contact DAS as soon as possible as it can take time to be assessed and for adjustments to be put in place.  If you have any questions, please contact our Departmental Disability Officer (Louise O’Sullivan: bg-ddo@imperial.ac.uk).

 

WEIGHTING OF EXAMS (AND COURSEWORK)
The weighting of all exams and coursework is stated in your programme handbook and the programme regulations.

EXAM RESULTS
The College academic and examination regulations for 2017-18 can be found here.

All exams, coursework and projects are marked by relevant members of academic staff. The marking procedure is regulated with strict marking guidelines. Once first marking and second marking has been completed the marks are considered at the Board of Examiners, which will determine the formal grade. For final year undergraduates and postgraduates, the overall degree classification will be determined. Your degree classification will be based on the programme regulations, which can be found in your handbook or on the ‘Programme information’ pages of the website.

Results for undergraduate students will be released around the first week in July by the department following the Board of Examiners. Formal results will be made available on your student e-service account by the Registry from August (Roughly one month after the department releases their results).

Results for postgraduate students will be released at some point in August. These will be provisional, pending confirmation by the Board of Examiners, which means in mid-October. Formal confirmation for the degree outcome including the breakdown of results will be made available on your student e-service account by the Registry in November.

VIEWING EXAM SCRIPTS
In compliance with College policy, it is not possible to view exam scripts. This is explained here

Under the GDPR data subjects have no right of access to their scripts, once submitted to their examiners, at any time. The College is under no obligation, therefore, to make available either the actual scripts or copies of them.”

APPEALS
The Department is not responsible for handing appeals. You must go through the Registry and further information on this can be found here.

Competency standards

These competency standards highlight the core skills students should be able to demonstrate by the end of their programme of study in the Department of Bioengineering. In addition to these competency standards, all students will be expected to meet the basic academic competency standards contained within the admissions policy for their programme of study.
