The programme

What will I gain from attending the programme?

This programme is an opportunity to experience life as a student at Imperial College London, a specialist STEM institution ranked 8th in the world. In week one students will join a learning stream and attend lectures, seminars, labs and workshops delivered by current Imperial faculty members focussed on developing understanding and practical skills. In week two students work in groups with students from all streams to solve a real-world challenge alongside staff from the Imperial College Advanced Hackspace. Students will develop group work, communication and presentation skills which are vital for all Imperial students.

What subjects can I study on the programme?

There are three academic streams available on the Global Summer School: Engineering, Physical Sciences, and Medicine and Life Sciences. For information about the academic programme and what students in previous years have studied please visit our academic programme page.


Which qualifications do we accept as proof of English language ability?

Please check this list of international qualifications and equivalents accepted at Imperial, and if you are unsure or yours is not covered, please contact us. We are flexible in the type of qualifications we can accept for this programme. When completing your application form please indicate in your personal statement whether English is your native language, whether you are taught in English at school, or whether you hold an English language qualification. Your teacher will need to confirm this in their reference.

What are the age requirements for the Global Summer School 2018?

To enrol on the Global Summer School in 2018 you must be 16 years old on or before 31 August 2018. You should not reach 18 years old at any point during your Global Summer School session. For example, if you enrol on the July Global Summer School you should already be between 16 and 17 years old, or be due to turn 16 before 31 August 2018. You should not reach 18 years old on or before the 2 July 2018.

Will I need a visa to attend the Global Summer School?

You can check if you need to apply for a visa in advance of arriving in the UK on the UK government website. If you are travelling from overseas to the Global Summer School you may require an invitation letter from us, once your place is confirmed on the course we can arrange to send you an invitation letter. When is the deadline?

Applications for the Global Summer School will close on 1 May. Applicants applying in Round 3 will be notified of the outcome of their applications on 17 April, and applicants applying in Round 4 will be notified on 16 May.

How do we assess applications?

We look first at whether applicants meet the age, English language and academic requirements of the programme, detailed on the Who we're looking for page. We will read the applicant's personal statement and teacher's reference. Once applicants have been scored against these five categories, we will fiinally consider the global spread and best fit of applicants across the sessions and streams. 

Can I make changes to my application once it has been submitted?

Students are not able to make changes to their application once it has been submitted. Please ensure you have completed all fields with the required information before submitting. Read our guidance for information on completing this form. If you require any minor changes to be made to your application after submission please contact the Global Summer Team. If major changes are required please submit a new application and withdraw the previous one.

How can I withdraw my application?

If you have not yet submitted your application, please log in to the application system, select your application and click the blue cross in the ‘Withdraw’ column next to your application. If you have submitted your application please contact us so that we can withdraw your application for you.


Is there a fee for the programme?

The cost of one residential place on the Imperial College Summer School 2019 is £4590. More information about the price and what is included is available on our price page.

Do we offer any scholarships or financial assistance?

Unfortunately we are unable to offer any discounts, scholarships, bursaries or financial assistance to cover the costs of the programme.


Can I live off-campus?

All students are required to live on-campus in Imperial student accommodation for the duration of the Global Summer School. The programme has a busy academic and social schedule and students will be occupied for most of the day and evening. We unfortunately cannot offer students passes to leave and return to Global Summer School during the programme.
